  • Frequently Asked Questions

    1. How long will it take to receive a decision on my application?
We aim to operate a fast and effective entry clearance service. We aim to process fast track applications within 4 working days (excluding the day of application), all other non-settlement applications within 15 working days. If you are applying to settle in the UK, in most cases we aim to process your application within 12 weeks.

These processing times can change, so please make your application in good time, but no longer than 3 months before you travel date.

    2. I am a regular traveller to the UK. Is there any system under which my application can be expedited?
Yes. If you meet the criteria you may use the "Fast Track" facility. All applications must be supported by relevant documentation and submitted at the VFS office. You can usually collect your passport within 4 working days between Monday to Friday, 15:00 and 17:00.

    3. I wish to study in the UK. Which sort of visa should I apply for?

      (a) Student Visitors
You should apply for this visa if:
      You are over 18 years
You wish to take a short course of study lasting less than 6 months.
You do not wish to work during your stay
You will not need to extend your stay in the UK.
Your course is for less than 15 hours per week or is in the evening or at weekends: the training provider must be on the DIUS Register of Education Providers.

You should not choose this if:
You are taking a sandwich course or any short course with a work placement element.

      (b) Points-based system - Tier 4
You should apply for this visa if:
You wish to take part time employment during your studies
You may need to extend your stay in the UK
You are undertaking a short term English course before going on to long term studies in the UK. Give details of both courses in your application.

      (c) Child Visitor

You should apply for this visa if:
You are a child under the age of 18 travelling to the UK for a short course of study lasting less than 6 months.
Please note: there is a requirement to demonstrate that adequate arrangements have been made for care in the UK. This means that you must give the name and address of the person you will stay with. You must also submit the necessary signed consent forms from both parents, and the name and passport number of who is accompanying you to the UK.

    4. Can I apply on behalf of a child?
Yes. You must bring the child's original birth certificate when applying for their visa. If you are not the child's parent then you will also have to support the application with a letter of parental consent, a copy of evidence of the parent's identity for example - passport and a letter from the child's school or college. The child has to come in person to the application centre for the biometrics scanning to be done.

    5. Can I present my application by e-mail?
No, at present we do not have the facility for accepting visa applications by email.

    6. Can I send someone to lodge my application?
No. All the applicants have to come in person to the UK visa application centre for the biometrics scanning to be done.

    7. Will I be interviewed?
Most applications are considered on the basis of the details given on the visa application form and other papers provided by you. In a small number of cases the visa officer will wish to interview you.

    8. When may I collect my visa?
Passports can be collected from the visa application centre between Monday to Friday, 15:00 -17:00.

    9. Can I send someone to collect my passport?
All applicants should collect their passport in person. In case of emergencies and reasons such as illness or if the applicants are residing out of Nairobi, they can nominate someone to collect the passport on their behalf. A duly signed authority letter should be submitted at the time of lodging the application. Collection by the third party is at the sole discretion of the UK Border Agency.

    10. Can I receive medical treatment while on a visit to the UK?
If you do not normally live in the UK you will usually be asked to pay for any treatment you might need. This is regardless of whether you are a British citizen or have lived or worked there in the past. The Department of Health website has further details.

    11. Where can I get further information?
Further information can also be found on the UK Border Agency website.

    12. Do I have a right to complain if I am not happy about something from your end?
